SINGAPORE — He was hospitalised at the time, but when he heard about a group of volunteers from India stranded at the Causeway as one of them did not have the right vehicle insurance to enter Singapore, the late Mr S R Nathan did not hesitate to help.

Mr Nathan, Singapore’s President from 1999 to 2011, telephoned his friend Mr Ramaswamy Athappan, asking if he could help the volunteers — who were on a motorcycle trip around Asia to raise awareness about female foeticide in India — to secure the required motor vehicle insurance.
